Happy New Year!

Yes I'm aware that it's already January 10th but I'm pretty sure we all know now that I'm a slug.

We had a wonderful Christmas, but New Year's was even better! Jello shots and Jenga and nausea and sparklers! Plus, it snowed! Having moved here from Phoenix, this was a big deal to me. Fireworks and snowflakes. What more can a girl ask for? I was all ready to post my video of my ride to the grocery store to buy tequila on New Year's Eve Eve but it's taking way too damn long to load.

Long story short, it snowed, I got tequila, all's well that ends well. Oh wait, it looked a little like this, but in motion:

As much as I complain about the gas bill, I really am loving this colder weather. Yes I know it's no Minnesota winter, but it's definitely not the Valley of the Sun that we came from. It's nice to be able to accesorize with scarves. Can you say one size fits all?

  1. Hi Emily,

Just stumbled upon your blog while looking for news on Juarez. I use to cross the border frequently in ElPaso but now live in Tennessee.

Your blog certainly paints a better picture than the news stories which make me feel like everyone there spends their days running for cover.

I wonder how people feel about the war against the drug cartels there. I know that it seems to me this is the first time I recall there being serious force against them. They went for so long without the governemt doing anything that hopefully Mexico will be a better place in the end. Then I read where the current President may not get re-elected in 2012. I wonder why not.

Well, I'm in the states and really dom't know what's going on there but I think I would want to keep the fight going until the cartels were to weak to continue.

Anyway, I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Stay safe and happy new year!

  3. Wanda,

I think some people feel like they spend their days running for cover. And others have a fear deep inside them but don't let it over-take their lives.

I am a firm believer that if something is destined to happen, it's going to happen. And that if you aren't a criminal and don't associate with criminals, you have just as much chance getting killed in Juarez as you do in New York City, or Atlanta, or Los Angeles, etc.

The sad thing about the situation in Juarez is that a lot of people don't have a choice but to associate with criminals because they are business owners and have to pay the quota. And sometimes, you don't have enough to pay the quota. This is where innocent people die.

I am fortunate to be able to cross the border to work therefor am not forced to come into contact with delinquents. That's really why my view of the city and life here is so sunny compared to what you hear in the news.

  4. Emily,

I hope you are right! Just be careful.

It reminds me of the old NY Mafias. They operated in the same way. I'm glad you have
accepted it. I live 5 miles from a really dangerous suburb of Memphis but if they decide to go on a crime spree out of their regular area, they head in the opposite direction to where I am. I often forget to even lock my doors. I'm in the woods. lol Still, I guess if it's my time a snake could kill me as dead a gang member.

It's 2:30 in the morning so I will close. I should have been in bed hours ago but I was watching a special on the Tuscon shootings. I guess you heard about the 19 people getting shot by the 22 year old scitzophrenic. There you go - proves your point!

    Take care.

    Wanda
